The Office of the Sheriff has faithfully and diligently served and protected the citizens of Sussex County for over 245 years.

Now in light of the events of September 11, 2001 we have been once again called upon to provide resources that will aid our citizens in pursuing a life free of threatening and harmful acts of violence.

To that end I pledge the resources of the Sheriff’s Office training, manpower, and equipment to the war on terrorism. It is my hope that the services and resources outlined in this brochure along with the listings of helpful web sites will be utilized by Sussex County citizens and will help us all reach the goal of a life free of threatening and harmful acts of violence.

 Search and Rescue and S.E.R.T.:

Consists of two Sheriff's personnel trained in Search and Rescue Management as well as person tracking and the development of the K-9 unit to aid in the search of missing individuals.

(Sheriff's Emergency Response Team)

Consists of specially trained Sheriff's personnel. The team trains on a regular basis to handle all tactical operations as well as the use of specialized weapons. The team is also capable of assisting in search and rescue operations.

 Sussex County Sheriff's Crime Stoppers Program:

Sussex County Sheriff's Crime Stoppers is a program designed to encourage cooperation between citizenry and the law enforcement community. It offers the citizens of Sussex County access to law enforcement in the form of anonymity and reward.

Community Policing:

The Community Policing Unit is responsible for going throughout the county and patrolling in the municipalities that do not have their own local police department. Officers are trained to interact with business persons and community organizations in an attempt to resolve issues and concerns as they relate to police responsibility in the community.

The officers are certified in radar and issue motor vehicle violations as well as detect and deter violations of the law. Members of this unit not only patrol in vehicles but also on foot interacting with the community. They also perform fingerprinting details, crime awareness programs and mall patrols.

Sussex County TRIAD

The Sussex County TRIAD is a three-way effort that consists of the Sheriff’s Office, the Sussex County Police Chiefs Association, and the AARP. These organizations agree to work together to reduce the criminal victimization of older citizens and to enhance the delivery of law enforcement services to this population. It provides an opportunity for the exchange of information between law enforcement and senior citizens. TRIAD focuses on reducing unwarranted fear of crime and improving the quality of life for seniors. TRIAD is tailored to meet the needs of each town/ County and is governed by a senior advisory council (S.A.L.T.)

The Senior Advisory Council (S.A.L.T.) Seniors and Lawmen Together meets each month. The council seeks representation from each community in the county. If you would like to serve on the council please call the Sheriff’s Office at 973-579-0850

Sussex County Hazardous Materials Emergency

Response Team

The Sussex County Emergency Response Team (SCERT) was established to provide specialized services to all the municipalities of Sussex County. This team enables us to protect the public, the environment, and property during incidents involving a release or potential release of hazardous materials . The team consist of members of the Sheriff’s Office and the Sussex County Health Department.

The Division of Emergency Management is part of the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office

It is the Mission of the Sussex County Division of Emergency Management to provide for the health, safety and welfare of citizens of the County of Sussex and to aid in the prevention of damage to and the destruction of property during any emergency. Through hazard identification and mitigation, emergency preparedness, response and recovery, the Division uses science, technology, planning and management to deal with extreme events that can injure or kill large numbers of people, do extensive damage to property and disrupt community life. In coordinating the efforts of police, fire, EMS, public works, public health and a myriad of volunteer organizations, teamwork is fostered that will result in the best possible outcome in critical emergencies and disasters.

Office for Victims of Crime

The “OVC” has established a national toll-free information line (800-331-0075) for victims and families of victims that responds to the needs of crime victims affected by the terrorist attacks. The information line is staffed by trained mental health professionals that provide crisis counseling.

American Red Cross

The Red Cross provides a disaster education kit for grades K-8 entitled “Masters of Disaster” to help schools incorporate disaster preparedness and response skills into such core subjects as math, social studies, science, and language arts.
