Sussex County Sheriff Robert Untig recently hosted a two-day seminar presented by the National Sheriff’s Association. The presentation was entitled “Managing Weapons of Mass Destruction Incidents: An Executive Level Program” for emergency personnel.
Held at the Lafayette Fire Department, the course was attended by sheriff’s, police, fire, EMS, health and emergency management personnel from the tri-state area. Several members of Local Emergency Planning Committees (LEPCs) in Sussex County also attended.
During the two days of lectures by instructors certified by the U.S. Department of Justice and sponsored by the National Sheriff’s Association, emergency personnel learned about the threat of terrorism, specific chemical, biological, nuclear and explosive weapons and the strategies for handling weapons of mass destruction incidents. A portion of the seminar was a hands-on briefing on the latest equipment available to emergency responders to detect weapons and protect themselves from dangerous materials.
The seminar was coordinated by the Sheriff’s Division of Emergency Management. All costs relative to the seminar were covered by the National Sheriff’s Association.
