Four members of the Bureau of Corrections were recently honored for exceptional and meritorious service. < Back Four honored for service Four members of the Bureau of Corrections were recently honored for exceptional and meritorious service. Previous Next Sheriff Michael F. Strada honored several corrections officers for exceptional and meritorious service in a ceremony held at the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office last Wednesday. Sergeant George Arnot was awarded the Exceptional Duty Medal in recognition of his tireless dedication and professionalism while serving as county coordinator for the Sussex County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) . In addition to those duties, Sgt. Arnot also serves as the deputy emergency management coordinator for the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Corrections as well as being an incident management team member in the Office of Emergency Management (OEM). The Exceptional Duty Medal is awarded to those sheriff’s personnel who, as a result of training, devotion to duty, or service to the public, bring acclaim to themselves, the office, or the police profession. Sergeant Arnot has served in the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office since 1989. He is currently the Bureau of Corrections chief training officer. Corporal Walter Chadwick was awarded the Meritorious Service Award in recognition of his actions during a residential structure fire in Stillwater Township on October 14, 2011. Cpl. Chadwick’s efforts to evacuate civilians in nearby residences, in complete disregard of his own personal safety, potentially saved the lives of multiple residents. His alertness and rapid response ensured those residents’ safety. The Meritorious Service Award is awarded to any sheriff’s personnel who succeed in a highly unusual accomplishment under adverse conditions with some degree of hazard of life and limb or where death or injury to a third party is prevented. A certified hazardous materials technician and member of the Sussex County Hazardous Materials Team (HAZMAT), Cpl. Chadwick has served in the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office since 1997. He is currently assigned to supervise the Sheriff’s Work Assistance and Labor Assistance programs . Corrections Officer Nicholas Pampanin and Corrections Officer Michael Scuzzese were awarded the Honorable Service Award in recognition of their successful efforts to prevent an inmate from harming himself during an attempted suicide on October 14, 2011. Officers Pampanin and Scuzzese, through their alertness and decisive actions, prevented the further harm and possible death of that inmate. Corrections Officer Pampanin has served in the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office since 2009; Corrections Officer Scuzzese has served since 2010. Both are currently assigned to the 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. shift. Sheriff Strada congratulates each of the above named personnel for their accomplishments and thanks them for their continued service.

Previous Next Sussex County Sheriff Michael Strada was a guest speaker at the Sparta Woman’s Club luncheon held recently at the Lake Mohawk Country Club in Sparta. Sheriff Strada was invited to share a presentation on the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office with the audience of fifty members. During the presentation, he spoke about the history of the sheriff’s office, the Bureau of Law Enforcement/Corrections Unit, the Sheriff’s Labor Assistance Program (SLAP)/Sheriff’s Work Assistance Program (SWAP), Emergency Management/Fire Marshal responsibilities along with the many community programs that are in place such as Crime Stoppers, Project Lifesaver, Outbound 9-1-1, Register Ready, D.A.R.E., TRIAD and CERT programs. The presentation, designed to educate the public about the many services that the sheriff’s office provides to the citizens of Sussex County, was followed by a question and answer session. Pre-register by Saturday, September 1, and fees are $20 for the 5K Run/Walk and $25 for the 10K Run. After September 1 through race day, fees are $25 for the 5K and $30 for the 10K. Arrested: David M. Ireland, age 32, of Augusta, NJ. < Back Driver using cell phone leads to DWI arrest Arrested: David M. Ireland, age 32, of Augusta, NJ. Previous Next On Thursday, September 5, 2013, while assigned to patrol duties within the borough of Branchville, Sheriff’s Officer John Swords observed David Ireland talking on a cell phone while driving through Branchville. Officer Swords initiated a motor vehicle stop and interviewed Mr. Ireland. Upon further investigation, Officer Swords determined Ireland was intoxicated. Officer Swords arrested Ireland and transported him to the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office for processing. Ireland was charged with the following offenses: driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, operating a motor vehicle while using a portable electronic device and possession of an open container/alcoholic beverage in a motor vehicle. He was given a future court date to appear in Branchville Borough Municipal Court and released to the care of a responsible party. Sheriff’s Officer Samantha Schilling and Sergeant John Gray assisted in the arrest.

Strada is pleased to announce the promotions of three officers within the Bureau of Corrections. Corrections Officer James Aumick has been promoted to the rank of corporal. He is a 1998 graduate of Wallkill Valley Regional High School and lifelong resident of Sussex County. A 15-year veteran of the Bureau of Corrections, Corporal Aumick began his law enforcement career in September 2002 when he was hired by the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office as a corrections officer. Corporal Aumick is a graduate of the Passaic County Police Academy Basic County Corrections Officer Training Class of 2003. A dedicated employee to the County of Sussex, Corporal Aumick has been assigned to the Sheriff’s SLAP/SWAP program for the past six years and is very well respected in our communities for his dedicated service to this program. Corporal Aumick has also been used and will continue to be used for many of our emergency operations here at the jail. He will remain assigned to the SLAP/SWAP Program. Corrections Officer Todd Blohm has been promoted to the rank of sergeant. Sergeant Blohm was hired in 2009 and attended Passaic County Police Academy. He is a member of the bureau’s Special Operations Group and actively assists with a variety of specialized tasks. Sergeant Blohm has been awarded the Meritorious Service Award, and was also named Employee of the Month in June of 2016. Sergeant Blohm’s professionalism, work ethic and leadership abilities are an asset to the department and we wish him the best of luck as he embarks on a new phase of his career. Corrections Officer Sean Long has been promoted to the rank of corporal. Corporal Long is a graduate of Port Jervis High School and also a graduate of Sussex County Community College with an associate’s degree in criminal justice. A 15-year veteran of the Bureau of Corrections, Corporal Long began his law enforcement career in September 2002 when he was hired by the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office as a corrections officer. Corporal Long is a graduate of the Passaic County Police Academy Basic County Corrections Officer Training Class of 2004. Corporal Long has received numerous commendations throughout his career including one in 2011 where Corporal Long’s lifesaving skills contributed to an inmate surviving a suicide attempt. Corporal Long’s professional abilities and his attention to detail has resulted over the years in the numerous findings and prevention of contraband in our facility. Arrested: Shawn Guerrero, age 28, of Landing, NJ < Back Man arrested at courthouse in Newton Arrested: Shawn Guerrero, age 28, of Landing, NJ Previous Next On Friday, September 6, 2013, while assigned to courtroom security at the Sussex County Superior Court courthouse in Newton, Sheriff’s Officer Robert Jacoby observed Shawn Guerrero. Believing Mr. Guerrero to be the subject of an outstanding Superior Court warrant, Officer Jacoby detained Mr. Guerrero until the warrant was confirmed. Upon confirmation, Officer Jacoby arrested Guerrero and transported him to the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office for processing. Guerrero was lodged in the Keogh-Dwyer Correctional Facility where he remains incarcerated in lieu of $10,000 bail.

Arrested: Alec S. Bloom, age 19, of Andover Township, NJ. < Back Andover Township man arrested at DMV Arrested: Alec S. Bloom, age 19, of Andover Township, NJ. Previous Next At approximately 11:30 a.m. on Friday, September 7, 2012, while assigned to the Motor Vehicle Commission in Newton, Sheriff’s Officer Scott Haggerty observed Alec S. Bloom. Believing Bloom to be the subject of an outstanding arrest warrant, Sheriff’s Officer Haggerty began to question him. While they were speaking, Sheriff’s Officer John Swords arrived to assist. Further investigation revealed the existence of three separate municipal court warrants for Bloom’s arrest originating from Hopatcong and Roxbury. Officer Swords immediately took Bloom into custody and transported him to the Keogh-Dwyer Correctional Facility where he was lodged in lieu of $2,750 bail.

Previous Next Sheriff Michael F. Strada is pleased to announce the following promotions within the Bureau of Corrections: Sheriff’s Corrections Sergeant Chris Lynch has been promoted to interim lieutenant. A 12-year veteran of the Bureau of Corrections, Lt. Lynch began his law enforcement career as a corrections officer at the Keogh-Dwyer Correctional Facility in 1999. He was promoted to sergeant in 2008 and was assigned to supervise the 3:00 to 11:00 p.m. shift before being transferred to oversee the Records and Classification sections. Lt. Lynch is graduate of the Passaic County Police Academy Basic Corrections Class and holds an associate’s degree in criminal justice from Sussex County Community College. Sheriff’s Corrections Officer Kelly Mizerek has been promoted to sergeant. A 10-year veteran of the Bureau of Corrections, Sgt. Mizerek began her career as a corrections officer at the Keogh-Dwyer Correctional Facility in 2001. Sgt. Mizerek is a graduate of the Passaic County Police Academy Basic Corrections Class and holds an associate’s degree in criminal justice from the County College of Morris. She is currently assigned to supervise the 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. shift. Sheriff’s Corrections Officer Bennett Milnor has been promoted to sergeant. An 8-year veteran of the Bureau of Corrections, Sgt. Milnor began his career as a corrections officer at the Keogh-Dwyer Correctional Facility in 2003. Since 2009, Sgt. Milnor has been supervised the work activities of inmates assigned to the Sheriff’s Work Assistance Program (SWAP) . Sgt. Milnor attended the Passaic County Police Academy Basic Corrections Class where he graduated in the top five of his class overall. He is currently assigned to supervise the 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. shift. Sheriff’s Corrections Officer Andrew Boden has been promoted to interim sergeant. A 14-year veteran of the Bureau of Corrections, Sgt. Boden began his career as a corrections officer at the Keogh-Dwyer Correctional Facility in 1998. He is a former member of both the Sheriff’s Operations Group and the Sussex County Hazardous Materials Team (HAZMAT). Sgt. Boden, a certified hazardous materials technician, was deployed to Louisiana in 2005 as part of Operation LEAD (Louisiana Emergency Assistance Deployment), New Jersey’s statewide response to assist in the clean up of areas affected by Hurricane Katrina. Sgt. Boden is a graduate of the Passaic County Police Academy Basic Corrections Class. He is currently assigned to supervise the 3:00 to 11:00 p.m. shift.
