New this year is a discounted rate of $10 for students who sign up as a team with their respective community or school sports teams. Previous Next Sheriff Michael F. Strada recently hosted a tour of the Sussex County Sheriff’s 911 Communications Center for Cub Scout, Den 5 of the Hampton Pack 96 Troop. Den leader Brandt Anderson said “Our kids are working on an advancement that requires our troop to examine the resources within their community that are designed to help the community function in a time of need.” Sheriff Strada, along with 911 Communications Director Mark Rozek, took the boys through the Sussex County Communications Center and discussed what happens when you place a 911 call. The kids received a great lesson in emergency services and how it helps the community. Mr. Anderson noted, “We are also incorporating the idea of local heroes. The kids have decided, on their own, that Sheriff Strada and his deputies are the heroes that they feel best serve our township.”

Previous Next Recently, Sergeant Krista Galante was named the 2018 New Jersey JSMART (Judicial Security Management Response Team) Law Enforcement Officer of the Year. JSMART is a cooperative effort between the 21 sheriff’s offices of New Jersey, the United States Marshals Service, the New Jersey State Police, and the Court & Judicial Security Unit of the state judiciary which is responsible for the provision of a statewide task force to protect the judiciary and the maintenance of a statewide protective intelligence database. Sgt. Galante has been with the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office since 2003, serving in both the Bureau of Corrections and the Bureau of Law Enforcement. Since JSMART’s inception in 2015, Sgt. Galante has been a core committee member, ultimately being named JSMART statewide communications coordinator in 2017, a role in which she still currently serves. Sheriff Strada congratulates Sgt. Previous Next On April 13, 2017 the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Corrections had four recruits successfully graduate the Morris County Police Academy. Officer Jake Costello is 26 years old and was hired by the Bureau of Corrections on April 25, 2016. His educational experience includes a diploma from Vernon Township High School in 2008, and a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Seton Hall University in 2012. Officer Costello has been in the New Jersey Army National Guard for three years and is currently a sergeant in a cavalry scout unit. He was the class president while in the academy, and also was awarded the Merit Award, Physical Training Award, and Firearms Award. Officer Alyssa Jodexnis is 25 years old and was hired by the Bureau of Corrections on December 14, 2015. She has been a great addition to the department and always conducts herself with pride and professionalism. Officer Alexis Cruz is 26 years old and was hired by the Bureau of Corrections on December 14, 2015. Her educational experience includes a diploma from Vernon Township High School in 2009. She is a great addition to the department and conducts herself with pride and professionalism. Officer Jennifer Demarest is 30 years old and was hired by the Bureau of Corrections on March 4, 2016. Her educational experience includes a diploma from Sussex County Technical School in 2004, and a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Felician College in 2013. Previous Next The Sussex County Sheriff’s Office concluded “No-Shave November” by raising $5,000 for cancer awareness. Over 65 officers and administration participated by forgoing shaving and collecting donations for this worthy charity. The non-profit group, No-Shave November’s mission is devoted to “growing” cancer awareness and raising funds to support cancer prevention, research and education. Sheriff Michael Strada, who participated as well, said “I am proud of the efforts made by our officers as we had far more participants this year than in the past. I would like to thank those who donated and we look forward to participating and raising more funds next year.”

Strada is pleased to announce the promotion of Sheriff’s Detective John Lindquist to sergeant. On Friday, March 21, 2014, in a ceremony conducted at the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office and attended by both family members and department employees, John Lindquist was officially sworn in as the newest sergeant in the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office. A 14-year veteran of the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Law Enforcement, Sgt. Lindquist began his law enforcement career as a sheriff’s officer in 2000. A graduate of the Bergen County Law and Public Safety Institute, Sgt. Lindquist has held numerous positions within the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office throughout his career including courts & transports, traffic enforcement, department evidence officer, the Sheriff’s Tactical Response Unit (TRU) and the Office of Emergency Management (OEM). Since 2006, Sgt. Linquist has been assigned to the Sheriff’s detective bureau. A certified firearms instructor, Linquist continues to serve as the department’s armorer and rangemaster during weapons qualifications. Following his promotion, Sgt. Lindquist will be assigned to supervise the courthouse security and prisoner transportation unit. Sheriff Strada congratulates Sergeant Lindquist and wishes him continued success in his career.

Previous Next Sheriff Michael F. Strada is pleased to announce the following promotions within the Bureau of Law Enforcement. Lieutenant Lawrence J. Beller , a United State Marine Corps veteran of Operation Desert Storm and a 21-year veteran of the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office, has been promoted to captain. Captain Beller has been a member of the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office since 1995. In 2005, he was promoted to sergeant and assigned to supervise the Courthouse Security & Prisoner Transportation Unit. In 2010, he was promoted to lieutenant and assigned to oversee the supervision of the courthouse unit. Following his promotion, Captain Beller has been assigned to oversee the daily operations of the Bureau of Law Enforcement. In addition to being awarded several honors throughout his career, Captain Beller received the Sheriff’s Lifesaving Award in 2011 for his rapid and successful response during a medical emergency at the Sussex County Fair. Captain Beller is a graduate of the 61st Middlesex County Police Academy Basic Police Class and the United States Department of Justice Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Leadership and Supervision course. Sergeant Derek Nerlinger has been promoted to lieutenant. A 1993 graduate of Sparta High School, a United States Army Veteran, and a 15-year veteran of the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office, Lieutenant Nerlinger began his law enforcement career in 2000 when he was hired as a federal corrections officer by the Federal Bureau of Prisons. The following year, he accepted a position as a sheriff’s officer in the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office. In 2008, he was promoted to sergeant and assigned to supervise the Courthouse Security & Prisoner Transportation Unit. A recipient of the United States Armed Forces Ribbon as well as the Hurricane Irene Service Ribbon, Lieutenant Nerlinger is a graduate of the Bergen County Law and Public Safety Institute’s 87th Basic Police Class, the United States Department of Justice Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Leadership and Supervision course, and the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey School of Graduate and Continuing Studies Front Line Supervision Program. Following his promotion, Lieutenant Nerlinger has been assigned to oversee the supervision of the Courthouse Security & Prisoner Transportation Unit. Corporal Michael Yanko , a 21-year veteran of the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office and a United States Marine Corps veteran of Operation Desert Storm, has been promoted to sergeant. He began his career serving in the courts and transportations unit. He was then assigned to the Community Policing/Civil Process Unit. His next assignment was as a detective in the Warrant Unit. Sergeant Yanko served in the Warrant Unit for 13 years. During his assignment in the Warrant Unit, Sergeant Yanko cleared over 9,000 arrest warrants. He also served in the Sheriff’s Tactical Response Unit (TRU). For the past three years, Sergeant Yanko has been assigned to the Sheriff’s Home Detention Program. Sergeant Yanko is a two-time recipient of the Sheriff’s Achievement Award, Hurricane Irene Service Ribbon and United States Armed Forces Ribbon. He has also received numerous letters of commendations throughout his career. Sgt. Yanko is a graduate of the Morris County Police Academy. Arrested: David J. Reshke, age 35, of Netcong, NJ and Courtney E. Kieffer, age 23, of Newton, NJ. < Back Couple arrested at MVC for outstanding warrants Arrested: David J. Reshke, age 35, of Netcong, NJ and Courtney E. Kieffer, age 23, of Newton, NJ. Previous Next On Friday, September 30, 2011, while assigned to the Motor Vehicle Commission in Newton, Sheriff’s Officer Scott Haggerty encountered Courtney Kieffer. Knowing her to be the subject of an outstanding arrest warrant from Andover Township Municipal Court, Sheriff’s Officer Haggerty immediately took her into custody. Further investigation revealed that Kieffer’s boyfriend, David Reshke, who had accompanied her to the Motor Vehicle Commission, was also the subject of an arrest warrant from Atlantic County. Both Kieffer and Reshke were immediately taken into custody Kieffer was released on bail and given a future court date. Reshke was lodged in the Keogh-Dwyer Correctional Facility.

Arrested: Joseph S. Selobyt Jr, age 44, of Branchville, NJ. < Back Drunk driver leaves scene of accident, breaks down Arrested: Joseph S. Selobyt Jr, age 44, of Branchville, NJ. Previous Next On Thursday, August 29, 2013, Sergeant John Gray observed a severely damaged vehicle which had broken down in the roadway of CR 633 in Hampton Township. Upon speaking with the driver of the vehicle, Joseph S. Selobyt, and then observing him attempt to perform several sobriety tests, Sgt. Gray determined him to be impaired. Further investigation revealed a trail of fluids and vehicular debris which led to the site of a motor vehicle accident on CR 617 in Stillwater Township which Selobyt had fled from before breaking down. Selobyt was arrested and transported to the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office for processing. He was charged with the following offenses: reckless driving, driving while suspended, leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident, failure to report a motor vehicle accident and driving while intoxicated. Selobyt was given a future court date to appear in Wantage-Sussex-Stillwater Joint Municipal Court and released to the care of a responsible person. Sheriff’s Officers Samantha Schilling and Johnny Swords assisted in the arrest.

Strada is pleased to announce several awards and commendations of his staff Life Saving Award : Corporal Jennifer VanDerWende and Sheriff’s Officer Kurt Miller were given the Life Saving Award for their actions during a medical emergency. These officers quickly administered first aid and stabilized the individual enough so that EMS could transport the individual to the hospital for advanced care.
