Strada Sheriff of Sussex County Welcome Our Services Important Information Please see below for announcements, information, updates and news you can use Dear Sussex County Community, I am excited to announce the inaugural Sussex County Sheriff’s Junior Sheriff’s Academy, scheduled to take place from July 21 to July 25 at the Sussex County Public Safety Training Academy. This program is designed for our future leaders and is open to Sussex County rising 6th, 7th, and 8th graders who are interested in exploring the world of law enforcement and public safety. The Junior Sheriff’s Academy will provide a unique opportunity for up to 40 prospective recruits to engage in a week of hands-on training and educational experiences. Participants will be formally vetted for acceptance to ensure a positive and enriching environment for all involved. Throughout the week, recruits will participate in daily physical training that includes team-building exercises, obstacle courses, and healthy physical activities. In addition to physical training, the curriculum will cover a variety of important topics, including: Law Enforcement Fundamentals Fire Safety First Aid Drug abuse prevention Sheriff’s K-9 Demonstrations Emergency Operations Drone Demonstrations Rescue Task Force Demonstrations North Star Helicopter Medivac Demonstrations 911 Communication Crime Scene Investigation Motor Vehicle Stops This academy aims to inspire and educate our youth about the vital role of law enforcement and public safety in our community. It is an excellent opportunity for young individuals to develop teamwork skills, gain knowledge, and foster a sense of responsibility. Applications for the Sussex County Sheriff’s Junior Sheriff’s Academy will be posted shortly on the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office website. I encourage all interested families to keep an eye out for this announcement and to submit applications promptly, as spaces are limited. July 21 through July 25, 2025 Location : Sussex County Public Safety Training Academy 114 Morris Turnpike, Newton, NJ 07860 (across from Sussex County Main Library). Fee : $100 to be collected with application- check or money order payable to: County of Sussex. Payment will not be deposited until after enrollment closure and recruit is accepted into the Academy. Applicants may be County residents entering the 6th, 7th, or 8th grade. Applications available at the Sheriff’s Office or online at www.sussexcountysheriff.com beginning Monday, May 12, 2025. Applicants will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis. Deadline for returning the completed application packet will be Thursday, June 19, 2025. Strada is pleased to announce several awards and commendations of his staff Life Saving Award : Corporal Jennifer VanDerWende and Sheriff’s Officer Kurt Miller were given the Life Saving Award for their actions during a medical emergency. These officers quickly administered first aid and stabilized the individual enough so that EMS could transport the individual to the hospital for advanced care. The quick actions of both officers resulted in a life being saved. (left to right), Sheriff Michael F. Strada, Corporal Jennifer VanDerWende, Sheriff’s Officer Kurt Miller Letter of Commendation: As a result of a Crimestoppers tip, Detective Michael Scott was involved in a three-month investigation that resulted in one of the largest CDS seizures in Sussex County history. His dedication to this case involved reviewing hours of surveillance, the application and execution of a search warrants, working together with other law enforcement agencies and he assisted in interviewing and prosecuting the suspects involved.     Arrested: Jessica J. Dutzi, age 31, of Stillwater Township, NJ. < Back Stillwater Township woman arrested for DWI Arrested: Jessica J. Dutzi, age 31, of Stillwater Township, NJ. Previous Next At approximately 2:05 a.m. on the morning of Saturday, August 18, 2012, Sheriff’s Sergeant John Gray was assigned to traffic enforcement within Hampton Township. While patrolling that area, he observed a dark colored sport utility vehicle, operated by Jessica Dutzi, failing to maintain her lane of traffic. After initiating a motor vehicle stop, speaking with Dutzi, and observing her attempt to perform several field sobriety tests, Sergeant Gray found her to be intoxicated. Sergeant Gray took Dutzi into custody and transported her back to the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office where she was processed and released. She was issued summonses for the following offenses: reckless driving, failure to keep right, driving while intoxicated, driving while suspended and obstruction Dutzi was released pending a September 5, 2012 court appearance in Hampton Township Municipal Court. Sheriff’s Officer’s Samantha Schilling and Sheriff’s Corporal Dan Storey assisted in the arrest.

Previous Next On June 9, 2011, sheriff’s detectives Michael Yanko and Richard Otte were attempting to locate and arrest Ms. Jennifer Barrise, who was the subject of an outstanding Sussex County Superior Court warrant for nonpayment of child support. In the course of their investigation to ascertain Ms. Barrise’s whereabouts, detectives Yanko and Otte paid a visit to the family home of Ms. Barrise’s boyfriend, Christopher Fitzpatrick, in Vernon Township. Based on information acquired from Fitzpatrick’s parents, the detectives learned that Barrise and Fitzpatrick were residing in Lake Ariel, PA. Further investigation led the detectives to suspect Barrise and Fitzpatrick may have been involved in criminal activity related to a newborn child. Detective Yanko immediately contacted investigators at the Honesdale Barracks of the Pennsylvania State Police. The following day, on June 10, as a result of the information furnished by Detective Yanko, the Pennsylvania State Police opened a homicide investigation and subsequently requested investigative assistance within Sussex County from the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff’s Detective Sergeant Michael Tidaback and detectives from the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office assisted Pennsylvania authorities with their investigation in New Jersey. While the matter remains under investigation in New Jersey and no charges—criminal or otherwise—are pending against either party, both Barrise and Fitzpatrick have been arrested and charged by Pennsylvania State Police. Mr. Fitzpatrick has been charged with criminal homicide, concealing the death of a child and abuse of a corpse. Ms. Barrise has been charged with criminal homicide and concealing the death of a child. Both are being held without bail at the Wayne County Correctional Facility in Texas Township, PA.

    Arrested: Jenna A. Agens, age 31, of Newton, NJ. < Back Traffic stop leads to warrant arrest Arrested: Jenna A. Agens, age 31, of Newton, NJ. Previous Next On Wednesday, December 19, 2012, while assigned to traffic enforcement within Hampton Township, Sheriff’s Officer Scott Haggerty initiated a motor vehicle stop on a vehicle with an inoperative brake light. While speaking with the operator of that vehicle, Officer Haggerty observed that one of the passengers was a woman he recognized as Jenna Agens. Believing her to be the subject of an outstanding Sussex County Superior Court warrant, Officer Haggerty asked her to confirm her identity. Agens then provided Haggerty with a fictitious name. Further investigation revealed the existence of both a Sussex County Superior Court warrant and several other warrants for her arrest issued by municipalities in Morris County. Officer Haggerty placed Agens under arrest and transported her to the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office for processing. Agens was issued a summons for providing false information to a law enforcement officer and given a future court date to appear in Green Township Municipal Court. She is currently lodged in the Keogh-Dwyer Correctional Facility in lieu of $10,000 bail.

Previous Next Sussex County Sheriff’s Crime Stoppers 5K/12K Saturday, September 17, 2016 Sussex County Fairgrounds in Augusta, NJ Race Start Time: 9:30 a.m. Join hundreds of runner/walkers and supporters in the race against crime at the Sussex County Fairgrounds on Saturday, September 17, 2016. Pre-register by September 10 , and the fee is $27 for either the 5K Run/Walk or 12K Run. After September 10 through race day, the fee is $30 for either race. Goody bags will be provided to all 5K and 12K runners/walkers while supplies last. Awards will be given to the top three male and female winners overall, the top three teams and by age groups. Enjoy food, drinks and entertainment after the event. Race proceeds will benefit the Sussex County Sheriff’s Crime Stoppers, a nonprofit corporation funded by contributions from local businesses and citizens at no cost to the taxpayer. Previous Next On Thursday, June 2, 2011, while assigned to the Division of Social Services offices in Newton, Sheriff’s Officer Matt Maines observed Caitlyn McKenzie. Knowing her to be the subject of an active outstanding Superior Court warrant, sheriff’s officers Maines and Matt Caine approached her and placed her under arrest. McKenzie was taken into custody, given a date to appear in Superior Court and released on her own recognizance. Sheriff’s Officer Edmund Galinski assisted in the arrest.

Previous Next On Saturday, December 28, 2013, while assigned to countywide DWI enforcement as part of the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” statewide campaign, Sheriff’s Officer Scott Haggerty observed a silver colored Dodge sedan failing to maintain its lane while traveling along Haggerty Road in Frankford Township. Officer Haggerty pulled the vehicle over and approached to speak with the driver. Upon speaking with the driver, Officer Haggerty immediately detected the obvious odor of marijuana from within the vehicle. Further investigation revealed one of the vehicle’s passengers, Alfred E. Bremel, to be in possession of a quantity of marijuana. Additionally, Bremel claimed ownership of a quantity of alcohol which was also in the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle was issued a summons for failure to maintain lane and Bremel was arrested, transported to the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office for processing, and subsequently released. Alfred E. Bremel was charged with the following offenses: possession of alcohol under the legal age, possession of marijuana in an amount less than 50 grams and possession of drug paraphernalia. Bremel was given a future court date to appear in Frankford Township Municipal Court. Sheriff’s Officer Warren Slahor assisted in the arrest.

Previous Next Sussex County Sheriff Michael F. Strada has graduated from the FBI National Academy Program’s 260th session held in Quantico, Virginia. Internationally known for its academic excellence, the FBI’s ten week program is a professional development course for U.S. and international law enforcement leaders. In attendance at the 260th session were leaders from 47 states, military organizations and federal civilian organizations with 22 of the students from 20 foreign countries. Its mission is “to support, promote and enhance the personal and professional development of law enforcement leaders by preparing them for complex, dynamic and contemporary challenges through innovative techniques, facilitating excellence in education and research, and forging partnerships throughout the world.” Less than 1 percent of law enforcement executives in the country ever receive the opportunity to attend the FBI National Academy. As a leader with a proven record as a professional within the law enforcement community, Sheriff Strada considers it an honor and a privilege to have been chosen to attend.
