Previous Next Sheriff Michael F. Strada is pleased to announce the recent graduation of three sheriff’s corrections officers from the Passaic County Police Academy 45th Basic County Corrections class. The corrections officers spent 15 weeks receiving training and academic instruction in the following courses of study: the administration of justice, emergency medical technician, cardio pulmonary resuscitation, the civil and legal rights of inmates, New Jersey state and penal law, corrections practices and job performance. All three recruits, who excelled during their time in the academy with one receiving academic honors and the other two receiving athletic awards, are currently assigned to the Keogh-Dwyer Correctional Facility. John Boeren —A 2003 graduate of Pope John High School and a lifelong Sussex County resident, Corrections Officer Boeren holds an associate’s degree in engineering technology from Penn State University. Officer Boeren enlisted in the United States Army Reserve in 2009 and continues to serve in that capacity. While attending the police academy, Officer Boeren received the Academic Award for maintaining the highest test average in the class throughout the course of training. Richard Cullen —A 2007 graduate of High Point Regional High School, Corrections Officer Cullen is a lifelong resident of Sussex County. Officer Cullen holds an associate’s degree in criminal justice from Sussex County Community College as well as a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Felician College. While attending college, and in addition to being named to the Dean’s List three times for academic achievement, Officer Cullen also interned with the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Corrections. While attending the police academy, Officer Cullen received the PT Award for his athletic achievements at all levels of the physical training course. Jeffery Hilbert —A lifelong resident of Sussex County, Corrections Officer Hilbert is a 2010 graduate of Wallkill Valley Regional High School. Officer Hilbert holds an associate’s degree from Sussex County Community College and is currently attending Felician College. While attending the police academy, Officer Hilbert also received the PT Award for his athletic achievements at all levels of the physical training course. Sheriff Strada congratulates each of the new corrections officers and wishes them continued success in their law enforcement careers.

Arrested: Alexander Bellino, age 19, of Sparta, NJ. < Back Sheriff's detectives arrest man at motel in Sussex Borough Arrested: Alexander Bellino, age 19, of Sparta, NJ. Previous Next On Thursday, April 7, 2011, sheriff’s detectives Mike Yanko and Richard Otte were in Sussex Borough attempting to locate Alexander Bellino, who was the subject of an outstanding Sussex County Superior Court warrant. Bellino was located at the Sussex Motel and a quantity of marijuana was found in his possession. He was taken into custody and additionally charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance in an amount of less than 1/2 ounce. Bellino is currently lodged in the Sussex County jail without bail.

Arrested: Shannon H. Foley, age 22, of Newton and Herbert W. Whitesell III, age 31, of Frankford Township, NJ. < Back Drug paraphernalia discovered on prisoner during transport Arrested: Shannon H. Foley, age 22, of Newton and Herbert W. Whitesell III, age 31, of Frankford Township, NJ. Previous Next On Friday, March 29, 2013, while assigned to fugitive transport duties, sheriff’s detectives Kieran McMorrow and William Lunger were assigned to pick up Shannon Foley and Herbert Whitesell from the New Jersey State Police barracks in Netcong and transport them to the Keogh-Dwyer Correctional Facility. The New Jersey State Police had arrested both of them earlier that day. Foley was the subject of an outstanding Superior Court warrant and Whitesell was the subject of several municipal court warrants. Further investigation revealed Whitesell to be in the possession of several hypodermic syringes and a glass smoking pipe with cocaine residue. Whitesell and Foley were both transported to the Keogh-Dwyer Correctional Facility and lodged without incident. Herbert Whitesell was issued multiple summonses for possession of drug paraphernalia and issued a future court date to appear in Newton Municipal Court. He remains lodged in the Keogh-Dwyer Correctional Facility in lieu of $6,377. Shannon Foley remains lodged in the Keogh-Dwyer Correctional Facility without bail.

Recipients were Sergeant John Gray of the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office and New Jersey State Police Trooper Victor Cabrera-Bonilla. < Back Sheriff presents life saving award to sheriff’s officer and state trooper Recipients were Sergeant John Gray of the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office and New Jersey State Police Trooper Victor Cabrera-Bonilla. Previous Next Sheriff Michael F. Strada presented a life saving award to Sergeant John Gray of the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office and New Jersey State Police Trooper Victor Cabrera-Bonilla in recognition of their response to a medical call in Sussex County. Both officers quickly responded to the call and performed “two-man CPR” while also utilizing an automated external defibrillator AED unit as the victim was in full cardiac arrest. Both Trooper Cabrera-Bonilla and Sergeant Gray continued to work together, established a heartbeat and the victim began to breathe. The victim was transported by the local first aid squad for additional medical attention and the victim survived the incident. Sussex County Sheriff Michael F. Strada said, “The lifesaving actions of Sergeant Gray and Trooper Cabrera-Bonilla reflect the highest standards of service to the community and their performance is an example of true professionalism.” Present at the ceremony were officers of the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office along with New Jersey State Police Station Commander Lieutenant Matt Avenatti of the Troop B Sussex Barracks. Lieutenant Avenatti praised the members of the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office by noting that because of the seamless relationship between the two law enforcement agencies, especially as they perform training sessions together, this enabled the two officers to work effectively. Four members of the Bureau of Corrections were recently honored for exceptional and meritorious service. < Back Four honored for service Four members of the Bureau of Corrections were recently honored for exceptional and meritorious service. Previous Next Sheriff Michael F. Strada honored several corrections officers for exceptional and meritorious service in a ceremony held at the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office last Wednesday. Sergeant George Arnot was awarded the Exceptional Duty Medal in recognition of his tireless dedication and professionalism while serving as county coordinator for the Sussex County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) . In addition to those duties, Sgt. Arnot also serves as the deputy emergency management coordinator for the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Corrections as well as being an incident management team member in the Office of Emergency Management (OEM). The Exceptional Duty Medal is awarded to those sheriff’s personnel who, as a result of training, devotion to duty, or service to the public, bring acclaim to themselves, the office, or the police profession. Sergeant Arnot has served in the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office since 1989. He is currently the Bureau of Corrections chief training officer. Corporal Walter Chadwick was awarded the Meritorious Service Award in recognition of his actions during a residential structure fire in Stillwater Township on October 14, 2011. Cpl. Chadwick’s efforts to evacuate civilians in nearby residences, in complete disregard of his own personal safety, potentially saved the lives of multiple residents. His alertness and rapid response ensured those residents’ safety. The Meritorious Service Award is awarded to any sheriff’s personnel who succeed in a highly unusual accomplishment under adverse conditions with some degree of hazard of life and limb or where death or injury to a third party is prevented. A certified hazardous materials technician and member of the Sussex County Hazardous Materials Team (HAZMAT), Cpl. Chadwick has served in the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office since 1997. He is currently assigned to supervise the Sheriff’s Work Assistance and Labor Assistance programs . Corrections Officer Nicholas Pampanin and Corrections Officer Michael Scuzzese were awarded the Honorable Service Award in recognition of their successful efforts to prevent an inmate from harming himself during an attempted suicide on October 14, 2011. Officers Pampanin and Scuzzese, through their alertness and decisive actions, prevented the further harm and possible death of that inmate. Corrections Officer Pampanin has served in the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office since 2009; Corrections Officer Scuzzese has served since 2010. Both are currently assigned to the 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. shift. Sheriff Strada congratulates each of the above named personnel for their accomplishments and thanks them for their continued service.

Arrested: Caitlyn McKenzie, age 25, of Hamburg, NJ. < Back Subject of active warrant arrested at county office Arrested: Caitlyn McKenzie, age 25, of Hamburg, NJ. Previous Next On Thursday, June 2, 2011, while assigned to the Division of Social Services offices in Newton, Sheriff’s Officer Matt Maines observed Caitlyn McKenzie. Knowing her to be the subject of an active outstanding Superior Court warrant, sheriff’s officers Maines and Matt Caine approached her and placed her under arrest. McKenzie was taken into custody, given a date to appear in Superior Court and released on her own recognizance. Sheriff’s Officer Edmund Galinski assisted in the arrest.

Arrested: Stephen Honthy, age 39, formerly of Hopatcong and Dawn Stewart, age 49, of Fredon Twp., NJ. < Back Fredon Township woman arrested after harboring fugitive Arrested: Stephen Honthy, age 39, formerly of Hopatcong and Dawn Stewart, age 49, of Fredon Twp., NJ. Previous Next On July 6, 2011, sheriff’s detectives Michael Yanko and Richard Otte were attempting to locate and arrest Stephen Honthy, who was the subject of an outstanding Sussex County Superior Court warrant for contempt. Detectives Yanko and Otte had received information that Honthy was staying at the residence of Ms. Dawn Stewart in Fredon Township. On an earlier occasion, detectives Yanko and Otte had approached Honthy at that location and he had fled from them. At that time, Ms. Stewart had denied Honthy was staying with her. On the afternoon of July 6, detectives Yanko and Otte returned to the Stewart residence and discovered Honthy there. He was immediately taken into custody. Further investigation revealed that Honthy had been residing at the Stewart home for some time. Subsequently, Dawn Stewart was taken into custody for harboring Honthy at her residence. Stewart was charged with obstructing the administration of law and hindering the apprehension of another. She received summonses for both charges and was released pending an appearance in municipal court. Honthy was charged with resisting arrest by flight. He is currently lodged in the Keogh-Dwyer Correctional Facility with no bail.

Arrested: Robert J. Slater, age 26, of Ogdensburg, NJ. < Back Man arrested at courthouse after attempting to fake drug test Arrested: Robert J. Slater, age 26, of Ogdensburg, NJ. Previous Next On Monday, March 21, 2011, Robert Slater was arrested by Sheriff’s Officer Johnny Swords after allegedly attempting to defraud the administration of a court ordered drug test. Sheriff’s Officer Swords took Slater into custody and, upon further investigation, discovered an outstanding municipal court warrant against him. Slater was charged with attempting to defraud the administration of a drug test and lodged in the Keogh-Dwyer Correctional Facility on $25,000 bail.

The deputy emergency management coordinator attended FEMA’s National Emergency Management Executive Academy in Emmitsburg, MD. < Back Corporal Mark Vogel graduates FEMA Executive Academy The deputy emergency management coordinator attended FEMA’s National Emergency Management Executive Academy in Emmitsburg, MD. Previous Next Corporal Mark Vogel, CEM , the deputy emergency management coordinator for the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office, recently graduated from FEMA’s National Emergency Management Executive Academy in Emmitsburg, MD. Corporal Vogel, who has served as deputy emergency management coordinator for the past fifteen years, completed the full curriculum that supports the advancement of the emergency management profession at strategic policy and executive leadership levels. This program has enhanced his talents in emergency management through critical thinking, visionary strategic planning, negotiation, and conflict resolution applied to complex real-world problems. Corporal Vogel completed the four resident courses in the Executive Academy to include: E0680 Examining Emergency Management Policy and Doctrine; E0682 Leading Complex Systems; E0684 Interpreting the Contemporary Emergency Management Environment; E0686 Creating the Emergency Management Stakeholder Community; and a collaborative capstone project. The Executive Academy instills emergency management leaders with a deeper understanding of contemporary and emerging emergency management issues, debates and public policy. It provides insights, theories, tools and resources that enable decision-makers to think and act more strategically and to build capacity to protect against, prepare for, respond to, recover from, and mitigate all types of disasters. Sheriff Strada, stating that Corporal Vogel’s training will continue to enhance the operations of the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office, Division of Emergency Management, commends Corporal Vogel for graduating from this prestigious program.
