Previous Next On Thursday, November 29, 2012, sheriff’s officers John Swords and Chris Megna were assigned to warrant apprehension duties. At approximately 9:45 p.m., officers Swords and Megna located George Meyer at his residence. He was the subject of multiple outstanding arrest warrants from local municipalities. Meyer was immediately taken into custody and transported to the Keogh-Dwyer Correctional Facility where he is currently lodged in lieu of $639.00 bail.

Arrested: Cory M. Mendola, age 21, of Hampton Township, NJ. < Back Hampton Township man arrested in Fredon for possession of marijuana Arrested: Cory M. Mendola, age 21, of Hampton Township, NJ. Previous Next On Saturday, December 28, 2013, while assigned to countywide DWI enforcement as part of the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” statewide campaign, Sheriff’s Sergeant John Gray observed a dark colored 2012 Acura TL driving erratically while traveling along County Route 519 in Fredon Township. Sergeant Gray pulled the vehicle over and approached to speak with the driver, Cory M. Mendola. Upon speaking with Mendola, Sergeant Gray immediately detected the obvious odor of marijuana from within the vehicle. Further investigation revealed Mendola to be in possession of a quantity of marijuana. Mendola was arrested, transported to the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office for processing, and subsequently released. Cory M. Mendola was charged with the following offenses: failure to keep right, possession of marijuana in an amount less than 50 grams, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of CDS in a motor vehicle. Mendola was issued summonses for the above offenses and given a future court date to appear in Fredon Township Municipal Court. Sheriff’s Officer Lew Labar assisted in the arrest.

Some Sussex County residents have reported receiving telephone calls within the last few days from someone stating they are calling from the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office. The caller says that you will be arrested if you do not satisfy a particular debt. They give a case number and a call back number. Do not fall for this latest scam. The Sussex County Sheriff’s Office is not making these calls . Pardon our appearance… < Back SCSO participates in No-Shave November Pardon our appearance… Previous Next The men and women of the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Law Enforcement will be participating in a month-long charity fundraiser in conjunction with No-Shave November , a web-based, non-profit organization devoted to growing cancer awareness and raising funds to support cancer prevention, research and education. To participate in No-Shave November, Sheriff Michael F. Strada has approved the temporary relaxing of our grooming standards for the bureau during the month of November. According to their website, the goal of No-Shave November is to grow awareness by embracing our hair, which many cancer patients lose, and letting it grow; then donating the money typically spent on shaving and grooming to fund education about cancer prevention, saving lives and aiding those who are fighting the disease. Each day, 22,000 people die from cancer worldwide. Nearly half of cancer diagnoses and deaths are preventable. No-Shave November’s mission is to not only raise funds for cancer research and treatment but to educate the population about preventative measures. For over six years, participants around the globe have put down their razors and foregone their hair appointments to join the fight against cancer. The No-Shave November campaign has successfully raised over $3.5 million dollars to combat this disease. Previous Next As a result of an anonymous call made to the Crime Stoppers hotline, the July 12, 2011 armed robbery of the Byram QuickChek spotlighted on our Crime Stoppers page has led to the arrest of three individuals. A cooperative investigation conducted by the Byram PD and the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office determined that the three perpetrators are members of the Blood Stone Villain street gang—James Smith aka “Truth,” the driver; Iben Glenn aka “Eazy” from Elizabeth, NJ, who was the gunman; and Richard Gordon aka “Mutah” from Roselle, NJ. Richard Gordon and Iben Glenn have been charged with robbery, conspiracy and possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes and lodged in the Keogh-Dwyer Correctional Facility. James Smith, currently incarcerated at the Yardville State Correctional Facility, will be charged at a later date. Sheriff Michael Strada and Lt. Larry Beller, Crime Stoppers coordinator, would like to extend their thanks to the caller who supplied the tip to the Crime Stoppers hotline.

Arrested: Juvenile, age 17, of Sparta, NJ. < Back Juvenile arrested for possession of LSD in courthouse Arrested: Juvenile, age 17, of Sparta, NJ. Previous Next On Thursday, March 31, 2011, while attempting to enter the Sussex County Superior Courthouse in Newton, a juvenile was found to be in possession of LSD, a controlled dangerous substance. Sheriff’s Officer Tim Hecht and Sheriff’s Officer Richard Nicola attempted to place the juvenile under arrest. The juvenile, a 17-year-old male from Sparta Township, physically resisted. After a brief struggle, sheriff’s officers Hecht and Nicola were able to subdue the individual and take him into custody. As a result, he was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance and resisting arrest. He is currently lodged in the Morris County Juvenile Detention Center without bail. Sheriff’s officers Hecht and Nicola both sustained minor injuries during the encounter.

Strada has announced that the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office will be participating in the Sussex County Prescription Drug Disposal Day in cooperation with the Center for Prevention & Counseling and the Hopatcong Police Department. Unused or outdated prescription drugs will be collected by sheriff’s officers posted at the Sussex County Municipal Utilities Authority (SCMUA) on Saturday, November 12, 2011, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The SCMUA is located at 34 South, Route 94 in Lafayette Township. Residents are encouraged to bring all unused or expired over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription drugs for safe disposal such as: drugs that did not work for you, a family member, or pet drugs that are no longer used or from deceased family members unknown tablets or capsules The Hopatcong Police Department is also participating in the program this Saturday and will have a police officer posted at the Medicine Shoppe located at 50 Hopatchung Road in Hopatcong between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. For more information, please contact the Center for Prevention & Counseling at 973.383.4787.

Strada Congratulates 911 Communications Center Dispatch Supervisor Andrea Wehrenberg on her Retirement. Sussex County Sheriff Michael F. Strada and the staff at the Sussex County Sheriff’s 911 Communications Center would like to congratulate, dispatch supervisor, Andrea Wehrenberg on her retirement after a combined 30 years of service. Andrea started dispatching for Newton Police Department in July of 1991 and worked there until March of 2020. Andrea was also a police matron and training officer for most of her 27 years at the department. In 2015 Andrea became a full-time dispatcher for Sussex County communications when the center first opened. She was quickly promoted to supervisor in March of 2016 due to her qualifications, experience and ability to lead. Andrea has become a pillar in the Sussex County communications Center. She is the training coordinator for the Communication center, TAC officer, most senior Supervisor, and our go to person for anything we may need help with professionally or personal. She single handed created our new training program and she has achieved numerous awards throughout her time here including dispatcher of the month multiple times, countless CPR saves, letters of commendation, and more. Andrea is also the only dispatcher to receive a stork pin after giving instructions via 911 to deliver a baby. Previous Next The Sussex County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) was a proud participant in this year’s American Cancer Society “No-Shave November” fundraiser. Throughout the month of November, and with the approval of Sheriff Michael F. Strada, 27 members of the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Law Enforcement elected to forego their daily shaving routines and donate at least a portion of the amount of money they would have spent on grooming costs to No-Shave November. At the time of this writing, $3,350.00 has been raised by the SCSO and will be utilized by No-Shave November to assist cancer patients and fund education about cancer prevention. Although participation by the SCSO in the fundraiser has ended, the good work the American Cancer Society does continues. Previous Next The Sussex County Sheriff’s Office’s participated in the New Jersey Statewide Nonsupport Warrant Sweep. The sweep targets noncustodial parents who are seriously delinquent in making child support payments. It is a cooperative effort of sheriff’s offices in all twenty-one counties, the Sheriff’s Association of New Jersey, the New Jersey Division of Family Development and the New Jersey Office of Child Support Services. According to Sussex County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Kieran McMorrow, the operation, carried out today by sheriff’s officers armed with arrest warrants, began in the early morning hours and resulted in the apprehension and arrest of seven individuals who failed to pay their court ordered child support. Additionally, two individuals surrendered themselves directly to the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office. Those arrested in the sweep were processed and lodged in the Keogh-Dwyer Correctional Facility. In order to be released, a delinquent parent must pay all the monies owed. If unable to make full payment, a court appearance will be scheduled and at that time, a Superior Court judge will determine, on a case-by-case basis, the amount that must be paid in order to gain release. Sheriff Strada, noting that the sweep will continue through Thursday, advises that Sussex County residents with an active warrant for nonsupport may want to contact his office to make arrangements for surrender to avoid being rousted by sheriff’s officers.
