Arrested: Marc E. Peterson, age 24, of Frankford Township, NJ. < Back Frankford Township man arrested for driving while intoxicated Arrested: Marc E. Peterson, age 24, of Frankford Township, NJ. Previous Next At approximately 1:05 a.m. on the morning of Saturday, July 2, 2011, Sheriff’s Officer Samantha Schilling was assigned to traffic enforcement within Frankford Township. While patrolling that area, she observed a gold-colored Saturn operated by Marc E. Peterson traveling in excess of the posted speed limit. After initiating a motor vehicle stop, speaking with Peterson, and observing him attempt to perform several field sobriety tests, Sheriff’s Officer Schilling found him to be intoxicated. Schilling took Peterson into custody and transported him back to the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office where he was processed and released. Peterson was issued summonses for reckless driving, failure to inspect, failure to maintain lane, speeding, open container in a motor vehicle and driving while intoxicated. He was released pending a July 14th court appearance in Frankford Township Municipal Court.

Arrested: Alexander Bellino, age 19, of Sparta, NJ. < Back Sheriff's detectives arrest man at motel in Sussex Borough Arrested: Alexander Bellino, age 19, of Sparta, NJ. Previous Next On Thursday, April 7, 2011, sheriff’s detectives Mike Yanko and Richard Otte were in Sussex Borough attempting to locate Alexander Bellino, who was the subject of an outstanding Sussex County Superior Court warrant. Bellino was located at the Sussex Motel and a quantity of marijuana was found in his possession. He was taken into custody and additionally charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance in an amount of less than 1/2 ounce. Bellino is currently lodged in the Sussex County jail without bail.

Previous Next At approximately 2:05 a.m. on the morning of Saturday, August 18, 2012, Sheriff’s Sergeant John Gray was assigned to traffic enforcement within Hampton Township. While patrolling that area, he observed a dark colored sport utility vehicle, operated by Jessica Dutzi, failing to maintain her lane of traffic. After initiating a motor vehicle stop, speaking with Dutzi, and observing her attempt to perform several field sobriety tests, Sergeant Gray found her to be intoxicated. Sergeant Gray took Dutzi into custody and transported her back to the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office where she was processed and released. She was issued summonses for the following offenses: reckless driving, failure to keep right, driving while intoxicated, driving while suspended and obstruction Dutzi was released pending a September 5, 2012 court appearance in Hampton Township Municipal Court. Sheriff’s Officer’s Samantha Schilling and Sheriff’s Corporal Dan Storey assisted in the arrest.

Previous Next The Sussex County Office of Emergency Management has been monitoring the approaching storm. We have been in continual communications with the our partners at the National Weather Service in Mt. Holly, NJOEM, JCP&L, Sussex Rural Electric and our twenty-four municipal offices of emergency management. We will continue these communications in an effort to promote situational awareness and provide guidance for countywide planning efforts. A winter storm warning is in effect from 1 PM today until 1 PM on Friday for most of New Jersey and 1 PM today until 1 PM Friday for northernmost New Jersey. Snow accumulation will range from 6 to 10 inches. Impacts Travel will become hazardous late Thursday as snow increases. This will be an increasingly fluffy snow and as winds increase Thursday night, blowing and drifting snow will make travel even more hazardous. Road plowing operations will be greatly affected, especially due to blowing and drifting snow and also snowfall rates near an inch per hour at times during the height of the storm Thursday night. Temperatures 20s to lower 30s Thursday, then dropping into the teens and single digits Thursday night into Friday. Wind Chills The combination of very cold temperatures and gusty winds later Thursday night will create dangerous wind chills ranging from 5 below to 20 below zero. The higher elevations should have the most dangerous wind chills. Humans and animals exposed to these extreme temeratures for any length of time will be in grave danger therefore, outdoor exposure should be minimized if possible. Frozen pipes in unprotected areas and concrete and asphalt pavement cracking can also be expected. Precautionary/Preparedness Actions A winter storm warning means severe winter weather conditions are expected. Heavy snow, blowing snow and dangerously cold wind chills are forecast. Travel will become dangerous. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. Arrested: Caitlyn McKenzie, age 25, of Hamburg, NJ. < Back Subject of active warrant arrested at county office Arrested: Caitlyn McKenzie, age 25, of Hamburg, NJ. Previous Next On Thursday, June 2, 2011, while assigned to the Division of Social Services offices in Newton, Sheriff’s Officer Matt Maines observed Caitlyn McKenzie. Knowing her to be the subject of an active outstanding Superior Court warrant, sheriff’s officers Maines and Matt Caine approached her and placed her under arrest. McKenzie was taken into custody, given a date to appear in Superior Court and released on her own recognizance. Sheriff’s Officer Edmund Galinski assisted in the arrest.

Previous Next Sheriff Michael F. Strada is pleased to announce the promotion of Correction’s Sergeant Will Puentes to Correction’s Lieutenant. Lt. Puentes, a 16-year veteran of the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Corrections, began his law enforcement career as a corrections officer at the Keogh-Dwyer Correctional Facility in 1995. He was promoted to sergeant in 2004 and assigned to supervise the midnight shift. A member of the Sheriff’s Tactical Response Unit, Lt. Puentes is a graduate of the New Jersey State Department of Corrections Academy and holds a bachelor of arts degree in psychology from Monmouth University. Commenting on Lt. Puentes’ leadership qualities at the swearing-in ceremony, Sheriff Strada cited Puentes’ exemplary employment history and past supervisory performance as a catalyst in his decision to promote him. “It will be a pleasure having him serve the people of Sussex County and the office of the sheriff. His dedication and chosen career path in the corrections field have shown him to be a conscientious, eager and valuable employee.” Sheriff Strada offered congratulations to Lieutenant Puentes and stated that he knows that “the highest standards and tradition of the office of the sheriff will continue with the promotion of such a fine officer.” Sheriff Strada is also pleased to announce the rank of corporal has been awarded to corrections officers Erich Olsen and Anthony Masucci. Previous Next Sussex County Emergency Management Coordinator Sheriff Michael Strada and Sussex County Administrator John Eskilson have announced that the Sussex County Vo-Tech School will be open for any Sussex County resident with sheltering needs. The Vo-Tech school is located on Rt. 94 in Sparta Township and will be opening tonight, October 28, 2012 at 8:00 p.m. Individuals utilizing the shelter are encouraged to bring their own toiletries, medications, blankets and snacks for themselves. We will have meals to provide individuals. The shelter will be domestic animal friendly, however, you will need to bring your own food for your pet and make sure your animals are leashed or in a crate. The shelter will be open for the duration of the storm as well as after the storm to assist our county residents. The shelter will be in operation 24-hours a day staffed by the American Red Cross, the Sussex County CERT team and the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office. Please be safe and be careful.

Arrested: John C. McCurdy, age 35, of Dover, NJ. < Back Sheriff's officer arrests man at courthouse Arrested: John C. McCurdy, age 35, of Dover, NJ. Previous Next On Monday, December 10, 2012, while assigned to courthouse security at the Superior Court in Newton, Sheriff’s Officer Joseph Cahill encountered John C. McCurdy. Believing him to be the subject of an outstanding municipal court warrant, Officer Cahill detained McCurdy and confirmed the existence of three separate municipal court warrants for his arrest. Officer Cahill immediately placed McCurdy under arrest and transported him to the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office. McCurdy was processed and lodged in the Keogh-Dwyer Correctional Facility until such time as he could be transported to the Morris County Jail.

Previous Next Sheriff Michael F. Strada recently announced that he has nominated Jeffrey Chandler of Newton to participate in the inaugural session of the statewide Leadership Excellence Direct Results (LEDR) program. Developed by the Team Eagle Foundation in cooperation with the Boy Scouts of America, LEDR is a week-long retreat designed to give 14 to 20 year old students a chance to explore their leadership skills, to connect with peers and to learn how to get involved in their communities. The program will be held in August at Camp Winnebago at no cost to the participants. “It was my pleasure to nominate Jeffrey for this excellent program. His involvement in community service and his status as Cadet Senior Airman - Civil Air Patrol, Juvenile Justice Academy and Trooper Youth Week graduate makes him the perfect choice,” stated Sheriff Strada.
