About Administration Under the leadership of Sheriff Michael Strada, the sheriff’s office provides numerous services to the citizens and local police agencies of Sussex County. ​ Professional Standards It is the policy of the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office to accept and investigate all complaints of alleged officer misconduct or wrongdoing from any citizen or agency employee. ​ Bureau of Corrections The Bureau of Corrections is responsible for the custody and care of incarcerated persons. ​ Bureau of Law Enforcement The Bureau of Law Enforcement represents the enforcement arm of the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office. Its personnel are tasked with carrying out the statutory responsibilities of the sheriff as mandated by the state constitution. ​ Communications Center The Sussex County Sheriff’s Communications Center provides regular dispatch services for the sheriff’s office and serves as a PSAP for enhanced 911 calls. ​ Emergency Management The Division of Emergency Management coordinates the efforts of police, fire, EMS, public works, public health and a myriad of volunteer organizations during emergencies. ​ Fire Marshal The fire marshal supports and facilitates the safety of the general public through fire safety education, supporting fire safety legislation and fire prevention education programs to minimize the loss of property and life. ​ Employment The Sussex County Sheriff’s Office hires employees based on the results of an open competitive law enforcement entry level examination given by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission. ​ Sheriff’s Office History The Sussex County Sheriff’s Office came into existence in 1753 and for well over 200 years now, has steadfastly remained committed to serving the residents of Sussex County. .

< Back Sheriff’s detective and officer arrest two in Newton Arrested: Charity Thompson, age 20 and Kevin J. Curran Jr., age 47, both of Newton, NJ. Previous Next On Monday, July 29, 2013, while assigned to fugitive apprehension duties, Sheriff’s Detective William Lunger and Sheriff’s Officer Christopher Megna located Charity Thompson and Kevin J. Curran at separate locations within the town of Newton. Thompson and Curran were both the subjects of outstanding Superior Court warrants. Further investigation revealed Thompson was also the subject of an outstanding municipal warrant from Frankford Township Municipal Court. Both were taken into custody and transported to the Keogh-Dwyer Correctional Facility where they were lodged without incident. Charity Thompson remains lodged in the Keogh-Dwyer Correctional Facility in lieu of $2,000 bail on the Superior Court warrant and $500 bail on the Frankford Township Municipal warrant. Kevin J. Curran Jr. was released on his own recognizance the following day after appearing before the Hon. N. Peter Conforti, JSC.

< Back SCSO raises $5,000 during No-Shave November $5,000.00 has been raised by the SCSO and will be utilized to support cancer prevention, research and education. Previous Next The Sussex County Sheriff’s Office concluded “No-Shave November” by raising $5,000 for cancer awareness. Over 65 officers and administration participated by forgoing shaving and collecting donations for this worthy charity. The non-profit group, No-Shave November’s mission is devoted to “growing” cancer awareness and raising funds to support cancer prevention, research and education. Sheriff Michael Strada, who participated as well, said “I am proud of the efforts made by our officers as we had far more participants this year than in the past. I would like to thank those who donated and we look forward to participating and raising more funds next year.”

Overview The Keogh-Dwyer Correctional Facility (KDCF) was opened in 1978. It was named in honor of Walter Keogh-Dwyer, a long-time Sussex County resident who served as a state assemblyman, freeholder and mayor of Vernon Township. The facility is used as the operations and command center for the Bureau of Corrections staff, who are responsible for supervising inmates during transports for admission to the Morris County Correctional Facility, court hearings and medical appointments. KDCF is a full-spectrum 24-hour operation professionally and efficiently operated by sworn corrections officers and administrative staff. The KDCF has consistently maintained compliance with the standards prescribed by the state for adult county correctional facilities.

< Back Sussex County Prescription Drug Disposal Day Get rid of unused/outdated prescription drugs on Saturday, November 12, 2011. Previous Next Sheriff Michael F. Strada has announced that the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office will be participating in the Sussex County Prescription Drug Disposal Day in cooperation with the Center for Prevention & Counseling and the Hopatcong Police Department. Unused or outdated prescription drugs will be collected by sheriff’s officers posted at the Sussex County Municipal Utilities Authority (SCMUA) on Saturday, November 12, 2011, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The SCMUA is located at 34 South, Route 94 in Lafayette Township. Residents are encouraged to bring all unused or expired over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription drugs for safe disposal such as: drugs that did not work for you, a family member, or pet drugs that are no longer used or from deceased family members unknown tablets or capsules The Hopatcong Police Department is also participating in the program this Saturday and will have a police officer posted at the Medicine Shoppe located at 50 Hopatchung Road in Hopatcong between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. For more information, please contact the Center for Prevention & Counseling at 973.383.4787.

< Back Sussex County Sheriff’s Office K9 Nutmeg and Detective Young attend the National Police Bloodhound Association Seminar and receive certification ​ Previous Next Sussex County Sheriff Michael F. Strada is pleased to announce that during the last week of April 2021, K9 Nutmeg and her handler Sussex County Sheriff’s Office Detective Cathy Young attended the National Police Bloodhound Association's Spring Seminar in McHenry, Maryland. This 40 hour block of instruction included one day of classroom refresher courses for the handler and 4 days of paws-on-the-pavement trailing work for the K9s. With the help and oversight of the expert NPBA instructors, K9 teams were tested on a variety of different surfaces, terrains, and aged trails. K9 Nutmeg approached her training with her best paw forward, making easy work of a 24+ hour-old trail and even running the entirety of an over 1-mile long trail. With her hard work and endless drive, K9 Nutmeg made it smooth sailing to achieving her 2nd national man-trailing certification. Sheriff Strada said, “K9 Nutmeg and Detective Young continue to be an asset to the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office. I couldn’t be prouder of their hard work and continued success, both with their training and their work in the field here in Sussex County.”

< Back Sheriff’s detective promoted to sergeant John Lindquist was promoted on Friday, March 21, 2014. Previous Next Sheriff Michael F. Strada is pleased to announce the promotion of Sheriff’s Detective John Lindquist to sergeant. On Friday, March 21, 2014, in a ceremony conducted at the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office and attended by both family members and department employees, John Lindquist was officially sworn in as the newest sergeant in the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office. A 14-year veteran of the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Law Enforcement, Sgt. Lindquist began his law enforcement career as a sheriff’s officer in 2000. A graduate of the Bergen County Law and Public Safety Institute, Sgt. Lindquist has held numerous positions within the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office throughout his career including courts & transports, traffic enforcement, department evidence officer, the Sheriff’s Tactical Response Unit (TRU) and the Office of Emergency Management (OEM). Since 2006, Sgt. Linquist has been assigned to the Sheriff’s detective bureau. A certified firearms instructor, Linquist continues to serve as the department’s armorer and rangemaster during weapons qualifications. Following his promotion, Sgt. Lindquist will be assigned to supervise the courthouse security and prisoner transportation unit. Sheriff Strada congratulates Sergeant Lindquist and wishes him continued success in his career.

< Back Sheriff’s officers arrest woman in Newton Arrested: Casey Barnett, age 20, of Newton, NJ. Previous Next On Wednesday, May 23, 2012, sheriff’s officers Darrin McDowell and Matt Maines were attempting to locate and arrest Ms. Casey Barnett, who was the subject of an outstanding Sussex County Superior Court warrant for violation of probation. Sheriff’s officers McDowell and Maines located Barnett within the Town of Newton and arrested her immediately. Casey Barnett is currently lodged in the Keogh-Dwyer Correctional Facility without bail.
