Previous Next On Wednesday, September 11, 2013, while assigned to countywide community policing duties, Sheriff’s Officer Johnny Swords observed a 2001 red colored Chevrolet pickup truck, operated by Kurt Takach, failing to maintain his lane and driving in excess of the posted speed limit. Officer Swords pulled the vehicle over and approached to speak with the driver. Upon speaking with Mr. Takach and observing him attempt to perform several basic sobriety tests, Officer Swords determined him to be intoxicated. Takach was subsequently arrested and transported to the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office for processing. Takach was charged with the following offenses: reckless driving, failure to maintain lane, failure to exhibit documents, DWI and speeding. He was given a future court date to appear in Wantage Municipal Court and released to the care of a responsible person. Sheriff’s Officer Samantha Schilling and Sergeant John Gray assisted in the arrest.

Sheriff Michael F. Strada, who took the helm of the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office on January 1 of this year, pledged to modernize the organization and open up the lines of communication. By all accounts, the new site embodies that commitment. “I want to get information into the hands of the public and other law enforcement agencies in our county,” Sheriff Strada said. “The web site serves as an important and cost-effective tool for disseminating information.” Lieutenant Dave Rome, the office’s information technology supervisor, worked with the web site developer to ensure that the new site is an informative, relevant and user-friendly resource. “To that end, I feel we were immensely successful,” said Lt. Some Sussex County residents have reported receiving telephone calls within the last few days from someone stating they are calling from the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office. The caller says that you will be arrested if you do not satisfy a particular debt. They give a case number and a call back number. Do not fall for this latest scam. The Sussex County Sheriff’s Office is not making these calls . Strada announced today that law enforcement officers from the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office will be cracking down on drunk drivers as part of the 2013 Labor Day “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign. Beginning August 16 and running through September 2, 2013, law enforcement officers will conduct sobriety checkpoints and roving patrols, looking for motorists who may be driving while intoxicated. “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” is a national campaign designed to raise awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving through high-visibility enforcement and public education. Launched across the U.S. in 1999, the program works to combat drunk driving during some of the busiest travel times of the year, including the Labor Day holiday period. “Recent surveys indicate that many people harbor the dangerous belief that after a few drinks they’re still safe to drive,” said Gary Poedubicky, Acting Director of the Division of Highway Traffic Safety. “Even one drink can impair your judgment and reaction time, putting not only yourself, but everyone on the road in danger.” In 2012, alcohol-impaired fatalities accounted for 19 percent of New Jersey’s motor vehicle fatalities. As part of the initiative, the Division of Highway Traffic Safety provides grants to local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to run the two-week campaign. The Sussex County Sheriff’s Office wishes everyone a safe and happy Labor Day weekend and offers the following advice: If you plan to drink, designate a driver, someone who will not drink alcohol, before you go out. Take mass transit, a taxi, or ask a sober friend to drive you home. Spend the night where the activity is held. Report impaired drivers to law enforcement. In New Jersey, drivers may dial #77 to report a drunk or aggressive driver. Always buckle up, every ride, regardless of your seating position in the vehicle. It’s your best defense against an impaired driver. If you’re intoxicated and traveling on foot, the safest way to get home is to take a cab or have a sober friend or family member drive you to your doorstep.

Previous Next The Sussex County Sheriff’s Office successfully exercised its communications backup facility recently. Rather than answering 911 calls and dispatching emergency service resources from its Frankford Township facility, communications personnel ran the operations from its hot site located at the sheriff’s office in Newton. This backup facility, often referred to as a “hot site,” serves as a redundant communications site to the Frankford location. Real time synchronization between the two sites is used to completely mirror the environment of the main communications site in Frankford using wide area network links and specialized software. In the event of a disruption to the main Frankford site, personnel can relocate to this hot site and resume operations with minimal downtime. In lessons learned from 9/11, this hot site provides for complete redundant emergency communications capabilities from a geographically different location. Sheriff Strada said “It’s great to see that we are prepared should we ever have a disruption.”

Previous Next Sheriff Michael F. Strada today announced the completion of his office’s participation in the 2011 New Jersey Statewide DWI Enforcement Grant. Funding for the statewide crackdown was secured through the Over the Limit/Under Arrest grant sponsored by the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety. The grant provided for 88 hours of enforcement during a pre-selected period in order to reduce the number of motor vehicle operators who drive their vehicles while under the influence of either alcohol or drugs. Between August 19 and September 5, 2011, sheriff’s officers arrested five individuals throughout the county for driving while intoxicated. Additionally, seven individuals were arrested and charged with narcotics related offenses. During that same period, approximately forty-six traffic summonses were issued for motor vehicle related infractions.

K9 Roxi and her partner Detective Justin McCann served for 8 years with the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office. Throughout her years of service, K9 Roxi responded to hundreds of calls that included school searches, DWI check points, K9 demonstrations, and roadside vehicle and residential searches. K9 Roxi worked with every local law enforcement agency within Sussex County and assisted both the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Narcotics Task Force and the New Jersey State Police. Additionally, K9 Roxi assisted with calls within Morris, Warren, and Union Counties as well as the United States Postal Inspection Service, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and Homeland Security. When K9 Roxi wasn’t on duty, she resided with Detective McCann and his family. Sheriff Strada and the men and women of the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office offer our sincerest condolences to Detective McCann and his family. K9 Roxi will be missed by many.

Previous Next At approximately 11:30 a.m. on Friday, September 7, 2012, while assigned to the Motor Vehicle Commission in Newton, Sheriff’s Officer Scott Haggerty observed Alec S. Bloom. Believing Bloom to be the subject of an outstanding arrest warrant, Sheriff’s Officer Haggerty began to question him. While they were speaking, Sheriff’s Officer John Swords arrived to assist. Further investigation revealed the existence of three separate municipal court warrants for Bloom’s arrest originating from Hopatcong and Roxbury. Officer Swords immediately took Bloom into custody and transported him to the Keogh-Dwyer Correctional Facility where he was lodged in lieu of $2,750 bail.

Arrested: Salvatore A. Romano Jr., age 49, of Swartzwood, NJ. < Back Suspended driver arrested for possession of CDS Arrested: Salvatore A. Romano Jr., age 49, of Swartzwood, NJ. Previous Next On Saturday, December 17, 2011, while conducting DWI enforcement in Fredon Township, Sheriff’s Sergeant John Gray initiated a motor vehicle stop on a car being driven by Salvatore Romano. Further investigation by Sergeant Gray revealed Romano to be in possession of a quantity of cocaine, a digital scale and other drug paraphernalia. Romano was taken into custody and transported to the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office where he was processed and charged with the following offenses: possession of a controlled dangerous substance, a crime of the third degree and possession of drug paraphernalia, a disorderly persons offense. Additionally, Romano was issued summonses for driving while suspended, possession of CDS in a motor vehicle and maintenance of lamps. He was given a future court date and released. Sheriff’s Officer Kieran McMorrow from the K-9 Unit assisted in the investigation.
